Searching for researchers or organisations
Searching for the profiles of researchers and organisations is essential for obtaining detailed information on the academic production of authors and universities in the scientific area in question. These searches make it possible to find important data such as publications, affiliations, and unique identifiers (ResearcherID or ORCID ID), which help verify the authenticity of authors and to explore joint collaborations and thus provide a comprehensive view of the impact and trajectory of researchers in the scientific community.
To carry out the search, follow these steps:
1st - Select the ‘Researches’ or ‘Researchers’ tab: access the researcher profiles section;
2nd - Choose the search method: you can search by author name or by unique identifier number (Web of Science ResearcherID or ORCIDID);
3rd - Search by name: enter the surname and first name or initial of the author's name. If the search is by ID, then enter the corresponding identifier;
4th - Refine the results: should there be several results, you will see a list of author records. Each record represents a set of documents that were probably written by the same person. Web of Science uses an algorithm to create these sets, although some publications may be associated with the wrong author. Use the filter options on the left-hand-side to adjust the results, such as: affiliations, publication dates, or research areas.
Example: if you are searching for an author with a common name, such as ‘Maria Oliveira’, then try narrowing down the results using filters for university affiliation, research area, or date ranges. This can help refine the results and avoid confusion with homonyms.
5th - Analyse the list of results: this analysis will show the name, name variants, last affiliation, number of documents, years of publication, main journals, a link to view recent publications, and also the Web of Science ResearcherID. A green tick indicates that the author has ‘claimed’ the record and checked the list of publications.
