Bibliographic Reference Manager: Mendeley

Adding references

Adding references

There are 3 ways to add records to the library:

  • Add New> File(s) from computer - Add one or several PDFs to the library.
  • Add New> Add entry manually -  Manually add a record to the library.
  • Add New> Import Library>  - Import files with extension:

                                                         BibTeX (*.bib)

                                                         Endnote XML (*.xml)

                                                                                    RIS (*.ris)

Add New> File(s) from computer

The Mendeley Reference Manager allows you to add files, namely PDFs, using the option File(s) from computer and may be done in the following ways:

  • selecting a reference from your computer and adding it to your Mendeley library
  • using drag and drop, dragging the desired PDFs to the central panel of the Mendeley Reference Manager.

In either case, Mendeley will automatically extract the metadata from the PDFs and create a library entry.

Add New> Add entry manually

When a PDF is not available, use the option Add Entry Manually to manually enter the details of a reference.

Select the appropriate document and fill in the fields to create an entry in the Mendeley library.

Tip: the DOI can be used to search for the details of a reference.

Add New> Import Library>

Your library can be transferred from other reference managers to Mendeley.

Use the Export option within the other software to extract your references in format:

  • BibTeX, EndNote XML or RIS file.

In the Mendeley Reference Manager, use the Import Library option in the Add new menu and select the location on your computer, name the export file and then save.

Select the exported file to add its contents to your Mendeley library.
