Bibliographic Reference Manager: Mendeley

Creating private groups

Creating private groups

Mendeley allows the creation of private groups enabling collaboration with other researchers in sharing full-text documents and new ideas.

Private Groups (private): Access restricted to group members.

In the free version, each user can create only one private group and each group can have up to 25 members. Each user can, however, belong to an unlimited number of private groups. The groups allow the sharing of references and full text documents (PDFs) which is limited to 100MB per user.

To create a group, click on the New Group option and give it a name.

Group management

To perform the Group Management, Rename and Delete, click with the right mouse button over a group.

Private groups have a limit on the number of members, according to the type of account:

25 members per group on free accounts

50 members per group in paid accounts

100 members per group in Mendeley Institutional accounts

Adding references to groups

To add references to a group, simply drag the references from All Documents to the desired group.

This can be done from both the Desktop and the Web versions, clicking the Sync button on the toolbar so that these changes are synchronised in both versions.

Sharing references with other researchers

PDFs and references can be shared with private groups and use shared annotations, although an invitation to these groups is required.

PDFs opened from a private group will be marked with "(Shared)" in the reading tab. This will help differentiate between a shared PDF and one from your personal library.
